About the Workshops
Taking Your Painting from Perception to Conception
Take charge, loosen up and create! Don't just paint what you see, explore and paint your concept of it. Composition and design will be stressed along with value, shape allocation and dominance using landscape and occasional figures.

We will be using a variety of application techniques to enhance your work, expand your thinking and fun, and make your painting your painting. Jim will provide sketches if you would like to use them, but you are urged to bring in your own subject matter.

There will be individual and group instruction along with demo and analysis. Some painting experience is recommended.

About the Artist:
Jim's approach and execution in painting evolves from over 45 years as an art director, graphic designer, painter and teacher.  A student at the famed Chouinard Art Institute and the Art Center College of Design in Los Angeles, he has also studied with nationally-recognized teachers including Rex Brandt, Robert E. Wood, Frank Webb, Steve Quiller, and Don Andrews.  He  regularly exhibits and conducts workshops at the San Diego Watercolor Society, the Studio of Art and Design, and other venues.

To students, his approach is one of enthusiasm and guidance, stressing principles, application, planning, and the best qualities of watercolor.  A dedicated teacher and lifelong student himself, Millard feels that the gift we have been given to express ourselves should be honored, but it needs to be nurtured with an understanding of the underlying principles of good art in order to paint with authority.
