About the Workshop:
In this relaxed workshop you will learn how to make watercolor monotypes. All painting levels are welcome. No printmaking experience required. Monotypes use printing techniques to produce unusual, one-of-a-kind paintings. You will explore methods that take advantage of simple household items to make unique artwork. The interaction of the plexiglass plate surface with watercolor paints, aren’t apparent until the very end, when you lift your paper to reveal often spectacular effects.
About the Artist:
Sue is an Associate Professor in the Departments of Medicine and Radiology at the University of California, San Diego. During the day she conducts research and teaches medical students and at night, she is a painter. She works almost exclusively from one or more digital photographs, which she takes herself. Her medical training has given her a very strong foundation both in anatomy and the observation of human behavior, which she feels assists her with portrait and human figure painting. She has always been fascinated by images of nature, closely observed. As a kid living in Quebec, she loved the colors of the rocks stuck in the asphalt that merged every spring as the snow started to melt, and the water ran down the street. Later she moved to the coast and translated this into rocks around, in and under water. She also paints using a technique known a monoprinting. Using the drawing as a guide, she paints directly on plexiglass using the watercolor paints. These images are hand transferred on to watercolor paper using a rolling pin. The paint transfers in unusual ways and the colors are bright, vibrant and fun.
